Scope of work
An assistant ophthalmologist is supposed to work under a certified ophthalmologist’s supervision. Out of this six-month course duration, four months are dedicated to theoretical knowledge and the remaining two months of practical experience. In terms of an operation, they are supposed to follow the pre and post-operation guidelines and implement the instructions as given by the ophthalmologist.
The course content
The course requires the assistant to have a basic understanding of the brain and its functioning.Besides understanding the body anatomy, they are supposed to understand the specifications. They need to take the patients’ measurements of ocular movement. They also need to do the record-keeping and administer medication whenever required.
Many paramedical colleges in India offer diploma and certificate courses in ophthalmology. However, with IPHI, the difference is in the supportive and curative training provided to learners. It encourages the participants to ask the question and become a better assistant. They are given on-ground training to use the contact lens fittings, different simulative pretest, and mental training to continue learning streak when they are on the job.
Job Prospect
After completing the course, the assistant may be hired by private nursing homes, private hospitals coma government hospitals or an NGO that works in vision improvement blindness prevention programs.
The Salary
The starting salary of an ophthalmologist assistant is 15000 to 18000, and it goes up with time.
